What it actually does

The flaw triggers a segmentation violation (crash) inside extractFrame at readers/swf.c when a malformed SWF file is processed, resulting in denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Work that depends on SWFTools to extract frames from SWF files can be interrupted by crashes, causing processing delays or workflow failures.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted SWF file to the extractFrame code path; the malformed input triggers an invalid memory access that immediately crashes the process.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a patched build once a fix is released; in the interim, avoid processing untrusted SWF files with extractFrame or replace the affected component with an alternative tool.

How to confirm the fix worked

Replay known crashing SWF inputs against the updated binary and confirm absence of segmentation faults or abnormal termination.

Typical attack path

  1. Create or obtain a malformed SWF file
  2. Invoke SWFTools functionality that calls extractFrame
  3. Trigger segmentation violation and application crash

How to detect it

Review process logs and crash reports for segmentation violation entries originating from readers/swf.c or extractFrame calls on SWF files.

What your security team should do

  • Restrict extractFrame usage to trusted input only
  • Monitor application logs for segmentation faults during SWF processing
  • Track upstream commits for a corrective patch and deploy promptly

The record

SWFTools commit 772e55a2 was discovered to contain a segmentation violation via extractFrame at /readers/swf.c.
