What it actually does

The controlla_login function produces session tokens using a predictable generation algorithm, enabling enumeration and brute-force guessing of valid tokens to hijack authenticated sessions without credentials.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can obtain full administrative access to the hotel management system, allowing unauthorized viewing or alteration of reservations, guest data, billing, and operational records with potential regulatory and financial consequences.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker locates an exposed HotelDruid instance, observes the format and sequence of session tokens returned during login attempts, then systematically brute-forces likely token values until a valid authenticated session is obtained.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a version that implements cryptographically secure, unpredictable session token generation; if no update is available, replace the application or apply custom session management controls that enforce strong randomness and expiration.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review source or runtime behavior of controlla_login to confirm tokens are now generated with a secure random number generator; perform black-box testing by collecting multiple tokens and verifying absence of sequential or low-entropy patterns.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for publicly reachable HotelDruid installations
  2. Trigger login flows to collect sample session tokens
  3. Analyze token pattern for predictability
  4. Execute automated brute-force against the session token space
  5. Reuse discovered valid token to access protected functionality

How to detect it

Examine web server and application logs for unusually high numbers of requests to login or session endpoints, repeated token submissions, or sequences of tokens that differ by small increments; correlate with successful access to protected resources from unexpected source IPs.

  • multiple rapid requests to /controlla_login or equivalent login handler
  • session tokens differing by small numeric increments in logs
  • successful authenticated requests immediately following failed token guesses

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict external access to the application until tokens are remediated
  • Monitor authentication endpoints for high volumes of failed or sequential token attempts
  • Plan migration or upgrade to a maintained version with proper session handling
  • Add web application firewall rules to throttle rapid authentication requests

The record

The component controlla_login function in HotelDruid Hotel Management Software v3.0.3 generates a predictable session token, allowing attackers to bypass authentication via bruteforce attacks.
