What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in swf_GetBits allows out-of-bounds memory writes during SWF parsing, enabling arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Processing a malicious SWF file can lead to full system compromise, data theft, or ransomware deployment on affected hosts.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a crafted SWF file that triggers the overflow in swf_GetBits when parsed; control-flow hijacking then executes attacker-supplied code in the context of the swftools process.

How to fix it

Upgrade swftools to a version containing a fix for the heap overflow; if no patched release exists, replace the tool with a maintained alternative and sandbox any remaining usage.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm swftools binary version is newer than the vulnerable 20201222 build; run known-good and known-bad SWF samples in an isolated environment to verify absence of crashes or unexpected code paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious SWF file containing oversized bitstream data
  2. Deliver file via email, download, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens or processes the file with affected swftools utilities
  4. Overflow occurs and shellcode gains execution

How to detect it

Search process execution logs and crash reports for swftools binaries handling SWF files; correlate with file-creation timestamps of suspicious .swf artifacts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict swftools execution to trusted inputs only
  • Replace swftools with supported alternatives where possible
  • Add file-type sandboxing and behavioral monitoring for any remaining SWF processing
  • Hunt for historical crashes or anomalous swftools process activity

The record

An issue was discovered in swftools through 20201222. A heap-buffer-overflow exists in the function swf_GetBits() located in rfxswf.c. It allows an attacker to cause code execution.
