What it actually does
Heap buffer overflow in handleEditText() within swfdump.c allows memory corruption leading to arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can fully compromise systems processing untrusted files, resulting in unauthorized access, data theft, or deployment of persistent threats; remediation is not time-critical per current threat data but should be prioritized in environments handling legacy file formats.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious file that triggers the overflow when the affected tool parses it, overwriting heap memory to redirect execution flow and run attacker-supplied code.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected golang/go (GIT) installations to commit 0d8a92bdfd3d6d1b24f47e05f9be46645aec94f0 or later; rebuild and redeploy any dependent binaries.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed binary or source tree contains commit 0d8a92bdfd3d6d1b24f47e05f9be46645aec94f0; test with known triggering inputs to verify absence of overflow.
Typical attack path
- Prepare a specially crafted input file targeting the vulnerable function
- Deliver the file to a system running the affected software
- Trigger processing via the command-line tool or integrated workflow
- Exploit the overflow to achieve code execution and establish control
How to detect it
Review process creation logs and command-line history for invocations of the affected tool on untrusted files; examine crash reports or memory dumps showing heap corruption patterns near the parsing function.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced commit immediately in build pipelines and dependency manifests
- Scan internal repositories and artifacts for older versions of the affected code
- Add file-format parsing tools to the list of high-risk utilities requiring strict input validation
The record
An issue was discovered in swftools through 20201222. A heap-buffer-overflow exists in the function handleEditText() located in swfdump.c. It allows an attacker to cause code Execution.
