What it actually does
A NULL pointer dereference in params_dump() within abc.c triggers an application crash during processing of crafted input files.
Why it matters to the business
Processing of untrusted files halts workflows that depend on SWF handling, causing operational downtime and potential loss of productivity in environments using the affected tools.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a malformed input file that reaches params_dump() with NULL parameters, resulting in an immediate crash and denial of service on the local system.
How to fix it
Upgrade swftools beyond the 20200710 release when a corrected version becomes available; otherwise replace the tool with a maintained alternative and avoid processing untrusted files.
How to confirm the fix worked
Reproduce crashes using known trigger files before and after any upgrade, and verify the absence of the vulnerable params_dump implementation via source inspection or binary analysis.
Typical attack path
- Create a specially crafted input file designed to reach params_dump() with invalid data
- Invoke the affected swftools binary against the file
- Trigger the NULL dereference to force an application crash
How to detect it
Monitor system and application logs for segmentation faults or abrupt crashes when swftools processes SWF files; review any core dumps or stack traces referencing abc.c.
What your security team should do
- Restrict swftools usage to trusted files only
- Monitor upstream project for any future patches and apply them promptly
- Evaluate replacement tools that are actively maintained
The record
An issue was discovered in swftools through 20200710. A NULL pointer dereference exists in the function params_dump() located in abc.c. It allows an attacker to cause Denial of Service.
