What it actually does

Null pointer dereference in traits_dump() within abc.c causes immediate process termination when parsing malformed ABC structures in SWF files.

Why it matters to the business

Processing untrusted Flash files with the affected tools can unexpectedly crash workflows, halting automated media conversion or analysis pipelines until manual intervention.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a specially crafted SWF file containing an ABC section that triggers the null dereference during traits_dump processing; the victim opens or converts the file locally with swftools, causing denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade swftools to the latest available build that resolves the abc.c flaw; if no update exists, replace the tool with an actively maintained alternative and restrict processing to trusted inputs only.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm current installed version against upstream repository; test remediation by attempting to process a known-triggering sample file and verifying the process no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Generate malicious SWF embedding malformed ABC traits data
  2. Deliver file to target environment via email, web, or shared storage
  3. Induce victim to invoke swftools utilities on the file
  4. Observe application crash and service interruption

How to detect it

Review process crash logs and core dumps for swftools binaries; correlate file access timestamps on suspicious SWF files with application failures.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict swftools usage to trusted files only
  • Evaluate and migrate to maintained alternatives such as modern SWF parsers
  • Add file-type sandboxing or containerization for any remaining legacy usage
  • Monitor upstream commits for a definitive patch and schedule upgrade

The record

An issue was discovered in swftools through 20200710. A NULL pointer dereference exists in the function traits_dump() located in abc.c. It allows an attacker to cause Denial of Service.
