Monitor only SSVC: Track

A flaw in an older tool that works with Flash files can let attackers take over a computer simply by tricking someone into opening a bad file with that tool.

What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in the OpAdvance function within swfaction.c allows an attacker to overwrite adjacent memory and achieve arbitrary code execution when processing a malicious SWF file.

Why it matters to the business

Processing untrusted SWF content with the affected tool can lead to full system compromise, data theft, or deployment of malware on developer or analyst workstations.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a specially crafted SWF file that triggers the heap overflow in OpAdvance during parsing; when a victim opens the file with an affected swftools binary, control flow is redirected to attacker-supplied code.

How to fix it

No official fixed release is available; discontinue use of swftools for untrusted input, replace with maintained alternatives, or sandbox all swftools invocations behind strict file-type and size filters.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm swftools version is newer than 20200710 or that the binary has been rebuilt from patched source; test with known-malicious SWF samples in an isolated environment and monitor for crashes or unexpected code paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Generate malicious SWF file exploiting the OpAdvance heap overflow
  2. Deliver the file via email, web download, or shared storage
  3. Victim invokes an swftools utility (e.g., swfdump, swfextract) on the file
  4. Overflow occurs and attacker payload executes with the privileges of the swftools process

How to detect it

Search process execution logs and file-access telemetry for swftools binaries opening files from untrusted sources; inspect crash dumps or sanitizer reports for heap-buffer-overflow signatures in swfaction.c; review any retained SWF files that coincide with unexpected process behavior.

What your security team should do

  • Remove or restrict swftools from environments that handle untrusted files
  • Implement file-type allow-listing and sandboxing for any remaining legacy SWF processing
  • Monitor threat intelligence feeds for public exploits targeting this component
  • Document the lack of an upstream fix and record compensating controls

The record

An issue was discovered in swftools through 20200710. A heap-buffer-overflow exists in the function OpAdvance() located in swfaction.c. It allows an attacker to cause code Execution.
