What it actually does

Buffer overflows in libtiff allow out-of-bounds writes when processing crafted GIF extension blocks, GIF raster images, or long filenames in TIFF processing tools, resulting in denial of service via application crashes.

Why it matters to the business

Image-handling applications or services relying on older libtiff versions may experience unexpected crashes when ingesting untrusted image files, leading to service disruptions for workflows involving GIF or TIFF conversion; the vulnerability is over a decade old with low exploit probability and no known active campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted GIF image containing oversized extension blocks or raster data, or a TIFF image with an excessively long filename, to vulnerable libtiff tools such as gif2tiff or rgb2ycbcr; the input triggers an out-of-bounds write that crashes the process. No named threat actors or ransomware use have been associated with this issue.

How to fix it

Upgrade libtiff to version 4.0.3 or later; rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications against the patched library; disable or restrict use of the affected gif2tiff and rgb2ycbcr utilities if upgrades are delayed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed libtiff version is 4.0.3 or newer via package manager or library metadata; attempt processing of known trigger images in a controlled test environment and confirm absence of crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target application or service that invokes libtiff for GIF or TIFF processing
  2. Craft a malicious GIF with oversized extension/raster data or a TIFF with a long filename
  3. Deliver the file via network upload, email attachment, or file share
  4. Trigger processing in the vulnerable tool or library call
  5. Cause out-of-bounds write resulting in denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for segmentation faults or crashes occurring during GIF or TIFF image processing; correlate with file ingestion timestamps from web servers, email gateways, or batch jobs that invoke libtiff tools.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of libtiff to 4.0.3+ across all systems
  • Inventory applications and containers that statically or dynamically link libtiff
  • Implement input sanitization or sandboxing for image conversion workflows until patched
  • Monitor vulnerability scanners for any remaining instances of libtiff < 4.0.3

The record

Multiple buffer overflows in libtiff before 4.0.3 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) via a crafted (1) extension block in a GIF image or (2) GIF raster image to tools/gif2tiff.c or (3) a long filename for a TIFF image to tools/rgb2ycbcr.c. NOTE: vectors 1 and 3 are disputed by Red Hat, which states that the input cannot exceed the allocated buffer size.
