What it actually does
The vulnerability triggers a heap-buffer overflow and segmentation fault when a crafted TIFF file is processed by the TIFFReadRGBATileExt API in libtiff, resulting in application denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Image-processing applications and services using libtiff on Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other platforms may experience unexpected crashes, causing service outages and workflow interruptions until restarts or mitigations are applied.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious TIFF file that exploits the buffer handling flaw in TIFFReadRGBATileExt and supplies it to any remote or local target that invokes the vulnerable API, causing an immediate crash without requiring authentication.
How to fix it
Upgrade libtiff to the latest patched release from upstream or Red Hat once available; apply vendor security updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux packages as soon as they are released.
How to confirm the fix worked
Reproduce the original crash with a known-bad TIFF sample before patching, then confirm the same sample no longer causes a segmentation fault after applying updates; review release notes for explicit fixes to TIFFReadRGBATileExt.
Typical attack path
- Create a specially crafted TIFF image file that triggers the overflow condition in TIFFReadRGBATileExt
- Deliver the file to a target system or application that uses libtiff to open or render TIFF content
- Invoke processing of the file through the affected API to induce heap corruption and denial of service
How to detect it
Inspect application and system logs for segmentation faults or crashes occurring during TIFF file processing; correlate process terminations with recent receipt of TIFF files from external sources.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching libtiff and dependent Red Hat packages as soon as fixes are published
- Restrict untrusted TIFF input sources in image-handling services until updates are deployed
- Add runtime monitoring for segmentation faults in processes that call libtiff APIs
The record
A segment fault (SEGV) flaw was found in libtiff that could be triggered by passing a crafted tiff file to the TIFFReadRGBATileExt() API. This flaw allows a remote attacker to cause a heap-buffer overflow, leading to a denial of service.
