What it actually does

Buffer overflow in the readextension function allows a crafted GIF file to trigger memory corruption that crashes the processing application.

Why it matters to the business

Processing untrusted GIF images can unexpectedly terminate image-handling services or applications, causing brief operational disruption; the issue is limited to older bundled versions of the affected software package and carries low urgency given its age and lack of observed exploitation.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious GIF file that overflows a buffer when the readextension function processes it; the file is then supplied to any local process or tool that uses the vulnerable LibTIFF code, resulting in an immediate application crash and denial of service. No named threat actors or ransomware campaigns have been associated with this flaw.

How to fix it

Upgrade the affected node (Bitnami) package to version 12.22.5 or later, which contains the corrected LibTIFF code; rebuild or redeploy any containers or images that embed the vulnerable version.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version is at least 12.22.5; test by attempting to process a known-triggering GIF with gif2tiff or any dependent image-handling utility and verify the process no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a GIF file that triggers the buffer overflow in readextension
  2. Place or deliver the file to a system running the vulnerable software
  3. Cause the target application or service to open or process the GIF
  4. Observe the resulting process crash and service interruption

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes of gif2tiff, tiff-related utilities, or any service that handles GIF files; look for entries around the time of suspected file processing that show segmentation faults or abrupt termination.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of node (Bitnami) installations to the fixed release 12.22.5
  • Scan container and dependency inventories for any remaining copies of LibTIFF 4.0.6
  • Add the package version check to routine vulnerability scanning pipelines
  • Review image-processing workflows to ensure they run with least privilege

The record

Buffer overflow in the readextension function in gif2tiff.c in LibTIFF 4.0.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted GIF file.
