What it actually does

Out-of-bounds read in multiple LibTIFF functions (checkInkNamesString, compresscontig, putcontig8bitCIELab, LZWPreDecode, NeXTDecode, TIFFWriteDirectoryTagLongLong8Array) when processing a crafted TIFF image, resulting in application crash.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can cause denial of service against systems that process untrusted TIFF images, leading to service disruption and potential operational downtime; the packages have been updated in recent releases.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious TIFF image that triggers one of the vulnerable decoding or directory-writing paths, then supplies the image to an affected tool or application that uses the vulnerable LibTIFF code, causing an immediate crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade slsa-verifier (Chainguard) and slsa-verifier (Wolfi) to version 2.5.1-r9 or later; rebuild any dependent images or artifacts that embed the vulnerable LibTIFF code.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version is at least 2.5.1-r9; test with known-good and known-bad TIFF samples to verify crash behavior is absent.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify an entry point that accepts or processes TIFF images
  2. Generate a specially crafted TIFF file targeting one of the listed functions
  3. Deliver the file to the target application or tool
  4. Trigger processing to induce the out-of-bounds read and crash

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes during TIFF processing; inspect any available core dumps or stack traces referencing the listed LibTIFF functions.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 2.5.1-r9 update immediately across all environments
  • Scan container images and build pipelines for any older slsa-verifier packages
  • Restrict untrusted TIFF image processing until patches are deployed

The record

LibTIFF 4.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via a crafted TIFF image to the (1) checkInkNamesString function in tif_dir.c in the thumbnail tool, (2) compresscontig function in tiff2bw.c in the tiff2bw tool, (3) putcontig8bitCIELab function in tif_getimage.c in the tiff2rgba tool, LZWPreDecode function in tif_lzw.c in the (4) tiff2ps or (5) tiffdither tool, (6) NeXTDecode function in tif_next.c in the tiffmedian tool, or (7) TIFFWriteDirectoryTagLongLong8Array function in tif_dirwrite.c in the tiffset tool.
