What it actually does

Improper handling of repeated ATMARP_MKIP ioctls allows clip_push() to be registered as both vcc->push and clip_vcc->old_push, causing infinite recursion and stack exhaustion on socket close via vcc_destroy_socket().

Why it matters to the business

Systems relying on Linux ATM CLIP networking can experience kernel crashes or denial of service; limited operational impact given low prevalence and absence from known exploitation campaigns, though kernel updates remain necessary for affected distributions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with permissions to issue ATM ioctls issues ATMARP_MKIP more than once on the same VCC, then closes the socket; the double registration of clip_push triggers recursive calls until stack guard page violation occurs. No named threat actors are linked to this specific flaw despite general Linux kernel privilege-escalation campaigns in the ecosystem.

How to fix it

Upgrade to fixed kernel commit f493f31a63847624fd3199ac836a8bd8828e50e2 or package versions envoy-gateway 1.5.0-r1 (and equivalent compat/egctl variants) for Chainguard and Wolfi; apply the lock_sock and vcc->user_back check patch.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel sources contain the vcc->user_back guard in clip_mkip and verify running kernel version against the fixed commit; test by attempting repeated ATMARP_MKIP calls and confirming no recursion occurs on close.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain privileges sufficient to open ATM sockets and issue ioctls
  2. Invoke ATMARP_MKIP ioctl at least twice on the same VCC
  3. Close the socket to invoke vcc_destroy_socket
  4. Trigger clip_push recursion leading to stack overflow

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and crash dumps for repeated clip_push frames in the call stack, stack guard page violations, or oops traces referencing net/atm/clip.c during socket release operations.

  • clip_push+0x6dc/0x720 net/atm/clip.c:200
  • BUG: TASK stack guard page was hit
  • vcc_destroy_socket net/atm/common.c:183

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel package updates for any systems exposing ATM interfaces
  • Restrict unprivileged access to ATM sockets via capabilities or seccomp
  • Monitor vendor advisories for backported fixes in stable kernels

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: atm: clip: Fix infinite recursive call of clip_push(). syzbot reported the splat below. [0] This happens if we call ioctl(ATMARP_MKIP) more than once. During the first call, clip_mkip() sets clip_push() to vcc->push(), and the second call copies it to clip_vcc->old_push(). Later, when the socket is close()d, vcc_destroy_socket() passes NULL skb to clip_push(), which calls clip_vcc->old_push(), triggering the infinite recursion. Let's prevent the second ioctl(ATMARP_MKIP) by checking vcc->user_back, which is allocated by the first call as clip_vcc. Note also that we use lock_sock() to prevent racy calls.
