What it actually does

Race condition in KVM SVM SEV/SEV-ES handling allows sev_info.es_active to be toggled after svm_vcpu_create() starts but before online_vcpus is updated, leaving an SEV-ES VM with a non-SEV-ES vCPU that has a NULL VMSA page.

Why it matters to the business

Virtual machines using SEV-ES memory encryption may crash or become unstable during live migration or vCPU creation, leading to workload downtime and potential exposure of sensitive encrypted state in high-security virtualization environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to initiate intra-host migration concurrently with vCPU creation on an SEV-ES VM can trigger the race, resulting in a malformed vCPU that crashes the host kernel when the NULL VMSA is later dereferenced during cleanup.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix in commit e0d9a7cf37ca09c513420dc88e0d0e805a4f0820 (or equivalent stable backports) and rebuild the kernel; for affected packages rebuild from the fixed GIT revisions listed for each repository.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit e0d9a7cf37ca09c513420dc88e0d0e805a4f0820, then exercise concurrent vCPU creation and SEV-ES migration under load while monitoring for NULL VMSA page faults.

Typical attack path

  1. Start kvm_vm_ioctl_create_vcpu on destination SEV-ES VM
  2. Initiate intra-host migration of the same VM while created_vcpus has incremented but online_vcpus has not
  3. Allow sev_info.es_active to become true after svm_vcpu_create has run
  4. Trigger vCPU destruction path that calls sev_free_vcpu on the malformed vCPU
  5. Kernel dereferences NULL VMSA page and crashes

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and crash dumps for oops messages containing sev_free_vcpu, svm_vcpu_free, NULL VMSA page faults at address ffffebde00000000, and the exact RIP sequence from constant_test_bit through ___free_pages.

  • sev_free_vcpu+0x413/0x630
  • BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: ffffebde00000000
  • CR2: ffffebde00000000
  • ___free_pages+0x3e/0x120

What your security team should do

  • Patch all affected Linux kernels to the fixed commit within normal change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
  • Restrict live migration of SEV-ES VMs until patching is complete
  • Add kernel oops monitoring for sev_free_vcpu and PageHead faults to detect attempted exploitation

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: SVM: Reject SEV{-ES} intra host migration if vCPU creation is in-flight Reject migration of SEV{-ES} state if either the source or destination VM is actively creating a vCPU, i.e. if kvm_vm_ioctl_create_vcpu() is in the section between incrementing created_vcpus and online_vcpus. The bulk of vCPU creation runs _outside_ of kvm->lock to allow creating multiple vCPUs in parallel, and so sev_info.es_active can get toggled from false=>true in the destination VM after (or during) svm_vcpu_create(), resulting in an SEV{-ES} VM effectively having a non-SEV{-ES} vCPU. The issue manifests most visibly as a crash when trying to free a vCPU's NULL VMSA page in an SEV-ES VM, but any number of things can go wrong.
