What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in tee_shm_put when reg_pair_to_ptr returns NULL during __optee_disable_shm_cache, causing kernel paging fault and panic on affected shutdown/hibernate paths.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes during power-off, hibernate, or sleep operations reduce availability on affected Linux systems; listed threat actors and container-optimized OS context increase urgency for environments with high downstream prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local low-privileged access triggers optee_shutdown paths where shared memory cache disable returns NULL, dereferencing it in tee_shm_put and crashing the kernel; observed in contexts associated with VMSCAPE and related container privilege-escalation campaigns.
How to fix it
Update openssh/openssh-portable (GIT) to commit 627337d95bee7dd8d4690238a35fffd35072d1fa; apply kernel patches addressing tee_shm_put NULL check; prioritize patching given 403 days since publication and container-optimized OS exposure.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version contains the tee_shm_put NULL pointer check; verify openssh/openssh-portable (GIT) at 627337d95bee7dd8d4690238a35fffd35072d1fa; test hibernate/shutdown sequences without triggering the reported panic.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local low-privileged access on affected Linux system
- Trigger power management or TEE shutdown sequence (e.g., hibernate or systemd-sleep)
- Cause reg_pair_to_ptr to return NULL in __optee_disable_shm_cache
- Invoke tee_shm_free leading to tee_shm_put on NULL pointer
- Kernel dereferences invalid address resulting in panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for Oops with tee_shm_put in call trace during systemd-sleep, hibernate, or device_shutdown; correlate with optee_shutdown and platform_shutdown entries; check for associated container privilege-escalation activity patterns.
What your security team should do
- Immediately apply the listed fixed commit for openssh/openssh-portable and corresponding kernel updates
- Monitor for power-management-related kernel oops on systems with TEE/OPTEE enabled
- Prioritize container-optimized OS instances due to associated privilege-escalation threat actors
- Restrict local access where possible until patched
