What it actually does

Race condition in ALSA PCM OSS layer leads to use-after-free on runtime->dma_area when snd_pcm_format_set_silence() executes outside PCM ops during stream initialization or reconfiguration.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using ALSA audio may experience kernel instability, crashes, or potential privilege escalation in concurrent audio stream scenarios; low immediate risk given absence from known exploited lists but relevant for audio-heavy workloads.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker triggers concurrent PCM stream reconfiguration and silence buffer clearing outside the access lock, causing the dma_area pointer to be freed while still in use; listed threat actors associated with Linux kernel privilege escalations could chain this into broader attacks.

How to fix it

Apply kernel patch from commit c0e05a76fc727929524ef24a19c302e6dd40233f; update affected packages to docker 1.9.1-1.mga5, golang 1.4.3-1.mga5, or equivalent stable kernel versions containing the fix.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel source includes the buffer access lock around silence initialization; test PCM OSS stream setup under concurrent load and verify absence of UAF reports in dmesg or kernel logs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify Linux kernel with vulnerable ALSA PCM OSS code
  2. Establish multiple concurrent PCM streams or reconfiguration threads
  3. Trigger snd_pcm_format_set_silence call on dma_area outside PCM ops
  4. Force buffer free during the silence operation to induce UAF
  5. Leverage resulting memory corruption for kernel code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for ALSA PCM UAF or oops messages during stream initialization; correlate with concurrent audio application activity and check for exploitation patterns seen in related Linux kernel privilege escalation campaigns.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all Linux audio servers and workstations within 30 days
  • Restrict untrusted audio stream access where possible until patched
  • Monitor EPSS trend and threat actor activity for Linux kernel CVEs
  • Audit downstream dependents for Mageia and git-based distributions

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: pcm: Fix race of buffer access at PCM OSS layer The PCM OSS layer tries to clear the buffer with the silence data at initialization (or reconfiguration) of a stream with the explicit call of snd_pcm_format_set_silence() with runtime->dma_area. But this may lead to a UAF because the accessed runtime->dma_area might be freed concurrently, as it's performed outside the PCM ops. For avoiding it, move the code into the PCM core and perform it inside the buffer access lock, so that it won't be changed during the operation.
