What it actually does
Buffer overflow in current_password_store() when user-supplied 'buf' is an empty string (length==0), causing access to buf[length-1] outside array bounds.
Why it matters to the business
On affected Dell systems running vulnerable kernels, local attackers may crash the kernel or escalate privileges; widespread Linux deployments increase exposure and patching urgency across fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access writes an empty string to the Dell sysman password sysfs attribute; the missing length check allows the subsequent index calculation to underflow and write beyond the buffer, enabling memory corruption that can be chained for privilege escalation.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit fb7cde625872709b8cedad9b241e0ec3d82fa7d3 or later; apply the vendor-supplied patch that adds an explicit empty-string check before indexing.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the added length==0 guard in current_password_store(); confirm running kernel version includes the fix commit or test with a zero-length write to the password attribute under controlled conditions.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell on target Linux system with Dell WMI sysman driver loaded
- Locate and open the current_password sysfs file under /sys/devices/platform/dell-wmi-sysman/
- Write a zero-length string to trigger the off-by-one access
- Leverage resulting memory corruption to overwrite kernel structures or pointers
- Escalate to root or execute arbitrary kernel code
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or panic messages referencing dell-wmi-sysman and current_password_store; inspect sysfs write attempts to password attributes from untrusted processes; correlate with process execution history around the driver.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Dell systems within the next maintenance window
- Restrict unprivileged local access to sysfs Dell sysman attributes via SELinux or AppArmor policies
- Monitor for new stable kernel releases containing the fix commit
- Audit systems for the presence of the vulnerable dell-wmi-sysman driver module
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: dell-wmi-sysman: Avoid buffer overflow in current_password_store() If the 'buf' array received from the user contains an empty string, the 'length' variable will be zero. Accessing the 'buf' array element with index 'length - 1' will result in a buffer overflow. Add a check for an empty string. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
