What it actually does
The flaw causes memory corruption in bfd_elf_reloc_symbol_deleted_p within bfd/elflink.c during ELF relocation processing in the ld linker when handling specially crafted symbol deletion scenarios.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could disrupt or compromise software build pipelines that rely on GNU Binutils, potentially leading to failed builds, corrupted outputs, or remote code execution on developer and CI systems with high attacker effort required.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious ELF object file containing manipulated relocations that trigger the vulnerable function during linking; the public exploit disclosure allows motivated adversaries to attempt remote memory corruption despite the noted high complexity and difficult exploitability.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream patch identified as b425859021d17adf62f06fb904797cf8642986ad to bfd/elflink.c; rebuild Binutils 2.43 or later from source with the fix incorporated and replace affected ld binaries across all build environments.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patched bfd/elflink.c is in use by checking the binary against the commit hash or re-running ld against known trigger cases from the public disclosure; verify no crashes or corruption occur on crafted test inputs.
Typical attack path
- Attacker generates a malformed ELF file targeting the relocation symbol deletion logic
- Victim invokes ld (or a build tool using it) on the malicious input, locally or via automated pipelines
- The vulnerable function processes the input and triggers memory corruption
- Attacker leverages the corruption for denial of service or attempts code execution
How to detect it
Review build server logs, core dumps, and process traces for ld invocations that terminate abnormally or reference bfd/elflink.c; search for repeated use of unusual ELF inputs in linker command lines or CI job artifacts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Binutils in all development, build, and CI/CD environments due to public exploit availability
- Scan source and binary repositories for pre-patch 2.43 versions and enforce updates
- Monitor build logs and system crashes for anomalous ld behavior as a temporary detection measure
The record
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU Binutils 2.43. Affected is the function bfd_elf_reloc_symbol_deleted_p of the file bfd/elflink.c of the component ld. The manipulation leads to memory corruption. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The complexity of an attack is rather high. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The patch is identified as b425859021d17adf62f06fb904797cf8642986ad. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
