What it actually does
Memory corruption in the _bfd_elf_write_section_eh_frame function within bfd/elf-eh-frame.c of the ld component in GNU Binutils 2.43.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could trigger crashes or limited code execution during linking operations on affected systems, potentially disrupting builds or supply-chain tooling with moderate operational risk given the high attack complexity.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious ELF object file and supplies it to the vulnerable ld linker, triggering the flawed eh_frame section handling to corrupt memory; public exploit details exist but require significant attacker skill and specific conditions to succeed.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Binutils installations to a patched release; for the listed nginx packages on Debian 13 apply version 1.26.0-1 or newer which resolves the underlying dependency issue.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Binutils version is updated past 2.43 and test linking operations with previously triggering ELF files; verify package versions match 1.26.0-1 or later on Debian 13 systems.
Typical attack path
- Identify or induce use of GNU Binutils ld on a target system
- Prepare a specially malformed ELF input file targeting the eh_frame processing logic
- Cause the linker to process the file during a build or linking operation
- Trigger memory corruption for denial of service or potential further exploitation
How to detect it
Review build logs and linker invocation records for unusual crashes or memory errors when processing ELF inputs; no widespread threat actor campaigns are associated with this issue.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Binutils in build environments and CI/CD pipelines within standard maintenance windows
- Monitor for any public exploit code reuse despite low EPSS and absence from KEV
- Review downstream package dependencies for Binutils usage across the environment
The record
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU Binutils 2.43. This affects the function _bfd_elf_write_section_eh_frame of the file bfd/elf-eh-frame.c of the component ld. The manipulation leads to memory corruption. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The complexity of an attack is rather high. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
