What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in SkipSpacesAndLineEnd during MD5 model parsing causes out-of-bounds read and potential application crash.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that load untrusted 3D models may crash, leading to denial of service and possible loss of user sessions or rendering pipelines.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malformed MD5 model file that triggers the vulnerable parsing path; when an application using the library processes the file, the overflow occurs and the program terminates.

How to fix it

Update the Assimp library to a version containing the fix for the SkipSpacesAndLineEnd function; if no official patch exists, apply vendor or community backports or disable MD5 model import until resolved.

How to confirm the fix worked

Rebuild with address sanitizer enabled and test against known malformed MD5 samples; confirm absence of crash and out-of-bounds access on the previously triggering inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malformed MD5 model file targeting the parser function
  2. Deliver file to target application via upload, import, or asset pipeline
  3. Trigger file processing in Assimp library
  4. Induce crash via out-of-bounds read

How to detect it

Review application logs for crashes during MD5 model loading; inspect process dumps or sanitizer reports for references to the parsing function and malformed file handling.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all products and services that embed Assimp and prioritize updates
  • Add MD5 model validation or sandboxing for untrusted assets until patched
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any increase in exploit activity

The record

A heap-buffer-overflow vulnerability was discovered in the SkipSpacesAndLineEnd function in Assimp v5.4.3. This issue occurs when processing certain malformed MD5 model files, leading to an out-of-bounds read and potential application crash.
