What it actually does

Invalid memory read in SortByPTypeProcess::Execute triggers segmentation fault during 3D asset parsing in the Assimp library.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that process untrusted 3D model files may crash unexpectedly, leading to denial of service and potential workflow interruptions in graphics, game, or CAD pipelines.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted 3D model file that reaches the faulty sorting routine; the library attempts to read from an unmapped address and terminates the process.

How to fix it

Upgrade the affected SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching package kgraft-patch-SLE12-SP4_Update_20 to version 14-2.2 or later; rebuild or redeploy any dependent applications after the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed package version matches or exceeds the fixed release; reprocess known crashing test files under AddressSanitizer or similar instrumentation to verify absence of the fault.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malformed 3D asset file targeting the SortByPTypeProcess path
  2. Deliver file to victim application that uses Assimp for import
  3. Trigger file parsing to reach Execute function
  4. Induce segmentation fault and application crash

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for segmentation faults originating from Assimp during model import; correlate crashes with file-processing timestamps and user-supplied assets.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the vendor patch to all systems using the affected live-patching package
  • Scan software bill of materials for any direct or transitive use of Assimp
  • Prioritize patching in environments that ingest untrusted 3D assets
  • Monitor for future Assimp updates given the library's broad ecosystem reach

The record

A segmentation fault (SEGV) was detected in the SortByPTypeProcess::Execute function in the Assimp library during fuzz testing with AddressSanitizer. The crash occurred due to a read access to an invalid memory address (0x1000c9714971).
