What it actually does

The flaw permits a local attacker to execute arbitrary code by abusing the CallbackToLogRedirector function inside the Assimp library used by affected SDL packages.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers who already have a foothold on a system can run unauthorized code, potentially leading to further compromise of graphics-processing applications and the underlying Linux environment; the issue affects many SUSE enterprise and openSUSE distributions but carries low external exploit probability.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access supplies input that triggers CallbackToLogRedirector in the Assimp component of an SDL package, causing the library to execute attacker-controlled code without additional authentication.

How to fix it

Upgrade the affected SDL packages on all listed SUSE products to version 1.2.15-150000.3.19.1 or later as provided by SUSE.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed SDL package version is 1.2.15-150000.3.19.1 or newer using the system package manager, then verify that the CallbackToLogRedirector code path is no longer reachable with test inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or user access on a system running an affected SDL package
  2. Craft or supply input that reaches the CallbackToLogRedirector function
  3. Trigger the vulnerable code path to achieve arbitrary code execution

How to detect it

Review local process execution logs and application logs around SDL or Assimp usage for unexpected code paths or crashes; no widespread exploitation indicators are currently known.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the vendor-supplied SDL package update 1.2.15-150000.3.19.1 across all affected SUSE systems
  • Inventory systems using SDL or Assimp to confirm exposure scope
  • Monitor for any future public exploit code given the current absence of known exploitation

The record

An issue in assimp v.5.4.3 allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code via the CallbackToLogRedirector function within the Assimp library.
