What it actually does
Data race on sk->sk_forward_alloc during concurrent tcp_v6_do_rcv and dccp_v6_do_rcv calls when socket is in TCP_LISTEN state, allowing inconsistent memory accounting values and triggering warnings or kernel instability.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panics or degraded network performance on Linux systems handling high-volume IPv6 TCP or DCCP traffic; organizations running affected kernels face unplanned downtime and must accelerate patching to meet operational continuity requirements.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers concurrent packet reception paths on a listening IPv6 socket; two threads invoke skb_clone_and_charge_r and sk_mem_uncharge simultaneously, racing on sk_forward_alloc updates and driving the value negative or inconsistent, which surfaces as a warning in inet_sock_destruct during socket teardown.
How to fix it
Update Linux kernel to commit 695fb0b9aecfd5dd5b2946ba8897ac2c1eef654d or later stable releases that prevent skb_clone_and_charge_r calls while sk_state remains TCP_LISTEN; apply the same guard in dccp_v6_do_rcv.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot patched kernel, run syzkaller reproducer or equivalent concurrent IPv6 listen traffic test, confirm absence of WARNING in inet_sock_destruct and stable sk_forward_alloc values under load; inspect git log for the referenced commit hash.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on target Linux system
- Create IPv6 TCP or DCCP listening socket
- Concurrently invoke tcp_v6_do_rcv or dccp_v6_do_rcv from multiple threads with crafted skbs
- Trigger skb_clone_and_charge_r and subsequent uncharge paths before state transition to established
- Observe negative sk_forward_alloc or kernel warning in softirq context
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for 'inet_sock_destruct' warnings mentioning sk_forward_alloc; inspect RCU softirq paths and socket destruction traces on systems that experienced unexpected reboots after IPv6 traffic spikes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all externally reachable or multi-tenant Linux hosts within 30 days
- Enable CONFIG_LOCKDEP and fuzzing on test systems to surface similar races before production deployment
- Restrict untrusted local code execution via seccomp or containers until patches are applied
- Monitor kernel logs for inet_sock_destruct warnings as a temporary detection signal
