A bug in Linux network card handling can let certain local operations crash the whole system when rules for directing network traffic are changed quickly.

What it actually does

Race condition in mlx5 flow steering allows concurrent rule addition during two-step FTE deletion, causing premature NULL of deletion function and refcount underflow leading to kernel panic.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using Mellanox mlx5 network cards can experience unexpected crashes and service interruptions when network flow rules are added or removed, increasing downtime risk for affected Linux servers.

How an attack unfolds

A local attacker with privileges to manage traffic control filters triggers simultaneous rule addition and deletion on mlx5 hardware, exploiting the unlocked active flag check to force a refcount decrement to zero and kernel panic during mlx5_del_flow_rules.

How to fix it

Update Linux kernel to commit 0d568258f99f2076ab02e9234cbabbd43e12f30e or later stable releases containing the lock around the FTE active flag check; rebuild and reboot with patched kernel.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify kernel version contains the referenced commit; reproduce deletion/addition sequences under load and confirm absence of refcount warnings in dmesg; monitor for mlx5_del_flow_rules call traces.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access with capability to invoke tc filter operations
  2. Create and delete flower classifier rules rapidly against mlx5 interfaces
  3. Trigger concurrent addition of matching rule while deletion is in progress
  4. Cause refcount underflow and kernel warning/panic in mlx5 core

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for 'refcount_t: decrement hit 0', 'mlx5_del_flow_rules', and call traces involving __mlx5_eswitch_del_rule or fl_hw_destroy_filter; correlate with tc filter change events.

  • refcount_t: decrement hit 0; leaking memory
  • WARNING: CPU:.*PID:.*at lib/refcount.c
  • mlx5_del_flow_rules+0x2f7/0x340
  • __mlx5_eswitch_del_rule
  • mlx5e_tc_del_fdb_flow

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing mlx5 hardware to untrusted local users
  • Restrict tc and cls_flower usage to privileged processes only via SELinux or capabilities
  • Enable kernel panic on oops logging and monitor for refcount warnings in production
  • Test patched kernels in staging environments with heavy flower filter churn before rollout

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5: fs, lock FTE when checking if active The referenced commits introduced a two-step process for deleting FTEs: - Lock the FTE, delete it from hardware, set the hardware deletion function to NULL and unlock the FTE. - Lock the parent flow group, delete the software copy of the FTE, and remove it from the xarray. However, this approach encounters a race condition if a rule with the same match value is added simultaneously. In this scenario, fs_core may set the hardware deletion function to NULL prematurely, causing a panic during subsequent rule deletions. To prevent this, ensure the active flag of the FTE is checked under a lock, which will prevent the fs_core layer from attaching a new steering rule to an FTE that is in the process of deletion.
