What it actually does

The flaw allows non-root qdiscs to receive TCA_STAB configuration, violating the invariant that qdisc_pkt_len(skb) remains unchanged between enqueue and dequeue, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference during sfq_dequeue when combined with certain qdisc setups such as TBF + SFQ.

Why it matters to the business

Local users can trigger kernel crashes that cause system reboots or denial of service on affected Linux systems, disrupting services and requiring manual intervention, with higher urgency due to the vulnerability's presence in widely used kernel trees despite low exploit maturity.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access crafts a traffic control configuration attaching an STAB to a non-root SFQ qdisc under TBF, then triggers packet processing that leads to the invariant violation and NULL dereference in sfq_dequeue; this was demonstrated via syzbot-style fuzzing and matches patterns seen in broader Linux kernel memory corruption campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2acbb9539bc2284e30d2aeb789c3d96287014264 or later; for Rocky Linux 8 firefox packages apply 0:91.5.0-1.el8_5 or newer; avoid attaching TCA_STAB to non-root qdiscs until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 2acbb9539bc2284e30d2aeb789c3d96287014264 or equivalent fixed version via uname and git describe; test traffic control configurations that previously triggered the crash no longer cause oops; monitor for absence of the described NULL dereference in kernel logs.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local unprivileged access on a vulnerable Linux system
  2. Use tc or equivalent to create a TBF qdisc with an SFQ child and attach TCA_STAB to the SFQ
  3. Inject or forward packets that exercise enqueue/dequeue paths
  4. Trigger the NULL pointer dereference causing kernel oops and potential panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops messages referencing sfq_dequeue, NULL pointer dereference at address 0000000000000000, and call traces involving qdisc_reset or sch_sfq; look for recent invocations of traffic control commands creating layered qdiscs with STAB attributes.

  • BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
  • sfq_dequeue (net/sched/sch_sfq.c:272 net/sched/sch_sfq.c:499)
  • Oops: Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP NOPTI
  • RIP: 0010:sfq_dequeue
  • 4c 8b 07 4c 89 02 49 89 50 08

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade affected kernels to the listed fixed commits prioritizing internet-facing or multi-tenant systems
  • Restrict unprivileged use of tc and qdisc configuration via SELinux or AppArmor policies until patches are deployed
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any rise in exploitation activity
  • Audit systems for custom qdisc scripts that may attach STAB attributes

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/sched: accept TCA_STAB only for root qdisc Most qdiscs maintain their backlog using qdisc_pkt_len(skb) on the assumption it is invariant between the enqueue() and dequeue() handlers. Unfortunately syzbot can crash a host rather easily using a TBF + SFQ combination, with an STAB on SFQ [1] We can't support TCA_STAB on arbitrary level, this would require to maintain per-qdisc storage.
