What it actually does
Use of uninitialized value in ppp_async_encode() when an empty skb is passed from pppoe_sendmsg() with zero-length data, resulting in KMSAN-detected uninit-value access that can lead to information disclosure or system instability.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers on affected Linux systems can trigger kernel memory issues leading to crashes or data leaks; low exploitability reduces immediate risk but kernel updates remain necessary for stability in networking environments using PPPoE.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker invokes sendmmsg with a zero-size message on a PPPoE socket, causing pppoe_sendmsg to allocate an empty skb that reaches ppp_async_encode and ppp_async_push where uninitialized memory is accessed; listed threat actors in Linux kernel uninitialized resource and out-of-bounds access campaigns could leverage similar paths though no public exploit exists.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit 4151ec65abd755133ebec687218fadd2d2631167 or later; for Rocky Linux 8 libjpeg-turbo packages apply 1.5.3-12.el8 or newer equivalent kernel packages from distribution vendors.
How to confirm the fix worked
Rebuild or boot the patched kernel and confirm absence of the syzbot-reported KMSAN uninit-value trace in ppp_async.c:545 when exercising zero-size pppoe_sendmsg; verify commit presence in /proc/version or kernel source.
Typical attack path
- Create or access a PPPoE socket
- Call sendmmsg or sendmsg with zero-length payload
- Trigger skb allocation with uninitialized data via sock_wmalloc
- Invoke ppp_async_encode through ppp_async_push and channel bridge input
- Access uninitialized values leading to KMSAN report or memory corruption effects
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KMSAN uninit-value reports mentioning ppp_async_encode or ppp_async_push; inspect audit logs for unusual sendmmsg calls from unprivileged processes targeting PPPoE sockets; correlate with threat actor activity around Linux kernel uninitialized resource issues.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using PPPoE or PPP async drivers within 30 days
- Monitor EPSS and threat actor reports for any rise in Linux kernel memory corruption activity
- Apply distribution-specific kernel packages containing the referenced commit
- Test network stack stability post-update with PPPoE workloads
