What it actually does
The vulnerability is a potential null pointer dereference in the AMD display driver (drm/amd/display) where previously null-checked pointers are reused without re-validation, allowing dereference of null values under certain execution paths.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using AMD graphics hardware may experience kernel panics or driver instability, leading to unplanned downtime and reduced availability on affected Linux deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers code paths in the display driver where the pointers become null after their initial check, causing a dereference that results in a crash; no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation exists for this specific issue despite general Linux kernel targeting by espionage and financially motivated actors.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 65e1d2c291553ef3f433a0b7109cc3002a5f40ae or later; for Rocky Linux 8 apply python-podman-api 1.2.0-0.2.gitd0a45fe.module+el8.5.0+770+e2f49861, toolbox 0.0.8-1.module+el8.4.0+556+40122d08, or libslirp 4.3.1-1.module+el8.7.0+1076+9b1c11c1 as appropriate.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the null pointer checks or matches the fixed commit hash; review Coverity reports or source for the added validations in the affected function.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems running vulnerable Linux kernel versions with AMD display support
- Craft or trigger display configuration changes or driver interactions that leave pointers null
- Cause the code path to dereference the unchecked null pointers
- Induce kernel panic or system instability
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for AMD display driver oops or null pointer dereference messages; correlate with display configuration changes or driver load events.
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates immediately on AMD-based systems to address the null pointer issues
- Monitor kernel logs for AMD display driver panics until patches are deployed
- Test display driver stability in staging environments before broad rollout
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Check null pointers before using them [WHAT & HOW] These pointers are null checked previously in the same function, indicating they might be null as reported by Coverity. As a result, they need to be checked when used again. This fixes 3 FORWARD_NULL issue reported by Coverity.
