What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer when head_pipe is null, allowing potential kernel memory corruption on AMD display hardware.
Why it matters to the business
System instability or crashes on Linux systems using affected AMD GPUs can cause operational downtime and require reboots, with higher urgency for organizations running unpatched kernels in graphics-intensive environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts conditions that invoke the function with a null head_pipe, such as through specific display layer configurations or resource allocation paths, leading to dereference and potential memory corruption; threat actors in espionage and financially motivated campaigns have targeted similar Linux kernel memory issues.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4f47292f488fa7041284dca1f1244116c18721f1 or later stable releases that include the null check; rebuild and deploy updated kernel packages across affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source includes the added null check before the assert in dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer; test display initialization under varied layer configurations to ensure no crash occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a Linux system with vulnerable AMD display driver
- Trigger display resource allocation paths that reach dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer with null head_pipe
- Cause null dereference leading to kernel panic or memory corruption
- Escalate to denial of service or attempt further exploitation of corrupted state
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for null pointer dereference oops messages referencing dcn32_resource.c or display pipe acquisition functions; correlate with recent display configuration changes or user-initiated graphics operations.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems with AMD GPUs within the next patching cycle
- Monitor EPSS trend for any further increase indicating rising exploit likelihood
- Review and restrict local user access on multi-user systems until patched
- Validate deployed kernel versions against the fixed commit hash
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Add null check for head_pipe in dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer This commit addresses a potential null pointer dereference issue in the `dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer` function. The issue could occur when `head_pipe` is null. The fix adds a check to ensure `head_pipe` is not null before asserting it. If `head_pipe` is null, the function returns NULL to prevent a potential null pointer dereference. Reported by smatch: drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/resource/dcn32/dcn32_resource.c:2690 dcn32_acquire_idle_pipe_for_head_pipe_in_layer() error: we previously assumed 'head_pipe' could be null (see line 2681)
