What it actually does
The flaw permits improper input neutralization that results in open redirects, allowing crafted URLs to redirect users to arbitrary external sites.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations face heightened phishing risk that can lead to credential theft, malware infections, or loss of user trust, with urgency driven by the flaw's age and stable low exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker identifies a vulnerable endpoint, appends a crafted redirect parameter to form a malicious link, and distributes the link through phishing channels; victims who click are sent to attacker-controlled sites without warning.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected installations to the fixed versions 2.3.0p16 or 2.2.0p34 (or later equivalents) and validate that redirect parameters are properly sanitized.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm deployed version meets or exceeds the fixed releases, then test sample URLs containing redirect parameters to ensure they no longer permit external targets.
Typical attack path
- Locate a vulnerable application instance
- Craft a URL containing an unsanitized redirect parameter
- Distribute the link via email, messaging, or web content
- Victim clicks the link and is transparently redirected to a phishing site
How to detect it
Inspect web server and application logs for redirect parameters pointing to external domains, correlate with user reports of unexpected site changes, and review access patterns to known phishing infrastructure.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed versions without delay
- Review and tighten URL redirect handling in all web applications
- Increase user awareness of phishing links and monitor for anomalous outbound redirects
The record
Improper neutralization of input in Checkmk before versions 2.3.0p16 and 2.2.0p34 allows attackers to craft malicious links that can facilitate phishing attacks.
