What it actually does

Improper validation of digital signatures during Zip Repair Mode allows an attacker to forge signatures on documents.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations relying on document authenticity for workflows face increased risk of tampered or malicious files being accepted as genuine, potentially disrupting trust in signed content and requiring urgent updates across document processing environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a specially malformed ZIP archive containing a digital signature, then triggers the Zip Repair Mode to bypass signature checks and produce a seemingly valid signed document that can be opened without warnings.

How to fix it

Upgrade all affected instances to the fixed version github.com/cri-o/cri-o (Go): fixed in 1.24.0 or later. Verify signature handling configurations after update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version meets or exceeds the fixed release, test signature validation on sample repaired archives, and review release notes for cryptographic fixes.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target using an affected version of the document processor
  2. Craft a ZIP archive with an invalid or altered digital signature
  3. Deliver the archive to the victim via email or file share
  4. Trigger Zip Repair Mode upon opening or processing
  5. Obtain a forged signature that passes validation

How to detect it

Review application logs for entries related to Zip Repair Mode processing of signed files, correlate with unexpected signature validations, and search for artifacts from document processing events around the time of suspected compromise.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching to the fixed version due to high CVSS and cryptographic nature of the flaw
  • Monitor EPSS trend and any emerging exploit maturity indicators
  • Audit document workflows that rely on Zip Repair Mode
  • Implement compensating controls such as disabling repair mode where feasible until patched
