What it actually does
Improper finite state machine implementation in processor hardware logic permits a local privileged user to trigger a denial-of-service condition by driving the affected FSM into an invalid or stuck state.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the vulnerable Intel processors may experience unexpected crashes or hangs when a local administrator executes specific sequences, leading to unplanned downtime on servers, workstations, or embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local administrative access crafts a sequence of privileged operations that exploits the flawed FSM transitions, forcing the processor into a state that halts normal execution and requires a reset to recover.
How to fix it
Apply the latest processor microcode updates and BIOS/firmware revisions from the system or motherboard vendor that address the FSM implementation; where microcode is unavailable, isolate or restrict privileged local access to affected hardware.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify microcode revision levels match or exceed vendor-supplied fixes, run vendor-provided diagnostic tools that exercise processor FSM paths, and confirm the system remains stable under the previously triggering privileged operations.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local privileged access on the target system
- Execute or trigger the specific instruction or register sequence that exercises the defective FSM
- Observe processor hang or system crash confirming denial of service
- Repeat or automate to maintain persistent disruption
How to detect it
Review system and kernel logs for unexpected processor resets or machine-check exceptions coinciding with privileged local sessions; correlate with authentication logs showing administrative logons immediately preceding crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of microcode and BIOS updates on all affected Intel platforms within change windows
- Restrict local administrative access to the minimum necessary personnel until patches are applied
- Include processor microcode version checks in standard asset inventory and hardening baselines
- Monitor vendor security advisories for additional affected SKUs and updated microcode releases
The record
Improper finite state machines (FSMs) in hardware logic in some Intel(R) Processors may allow an privileged user to potentially enable a denial of service via local access.
