What it actually does
The flaw exposes an observable discrepancy in the RAPL power interface on affected Intel processors, enabling a privileged local attacker to infer and extract sensitive processor state or data through side-channel measurements.
Why it matters to the business
Confidential data processed on vulnerable Intel CPUs may leak to local privileged users, raising the risk of information theft and compliance issues in server and workstation fleets.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker with administrative privileges repeatedly samples RAPL counters to observe timing or power variations that correlate with internal CPU operations, gradually reconstructing sensitive information such as cryptographic keys or memory contents.
How to fix it
Apply the latest Intel microcode updates and vendor-supplied BIOS or firmware packages that address the RAPL interface discrepancy on affected processor models.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm updated microcode revision via CPUID or vendor tools, then verify that RAPL readings no longer exhibit the previously observable discrepancy under controlled test workloads.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell access on a target system
- Escalate to privileged user context
- Access RAPL MSRs or sysfs interfaces
- Collect and statistically analyze power samples to reconstruct data
How to detect it
Review system logs and audit trails for repeated privileged access to power-management registers or RAPL-related sysfs entries; correlate with unusual process activity on affected hosts.
What your security team should do
- Deploy microcode and firmware updates to all systems containing affected Intel processors
- Limit local administrative access to only essential personnel
- Review and harden power-management interface exposure in production environments
The record
Observable discrepancy in RAPL interface for some Intel(R) Processors may allow a privileged user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access.
