What it actually does

Improper isolation in the Intel Core Ultra processor stream cache allows an authenticated local user to access and modify privileged memory regions, enabling privilege escalation.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with limited local access can gain full system control on affected hardware, leading to data breaches, unauthorized changes, and complete compromise of workloads running on those processors.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with a local authenticated session crafts inputs that exploit the stream cache isolation flaw to read or write kernel-level memory structures, ultimately elevating their privileges to root or administrator level.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Intel microcode and firmware updates for affected Core Ultra processors; for minio (Bitnami) deployments, upgrade to version 2022-04-12t06-55-35z.0.0 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify processor microcode version against Intel's security advisories and confirm minio (Bitnami) package version meets or exceeds the fixed release; test privilege boundaries with local user accounts.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local authenticated access to a system with the vulnerable Intel Core Ultra processor
  2. Execute code that triggers the stream cache isolation weakness
  3. Escalate privileges by accessing protected memory regions
  4. Install persistence mechanisms or exfiltrate data under elevated rights

How to detect it

Examine system logs for unexpected privilege escalations, monitor process execution from low-privileged accounts accessing kernel memory regions, and review audit trails for anomalous local activity on affected hardware.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize firmware and microcode updates on all systems using Intel Core Ultra processors
  • Restrict local user accounts and monitor for unusual privilege changes
  • Review and enforce least-privilege access policies until patches are applied

The record

Improper isolation in the Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra Processor stream cache mechanism may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable escalation of privilege via local access.
