What it actually does
Out-of-bounds write in sopen_FAMOS_read allows arbitrary code execution when parsing a crafted .famos file.
Why it matters to the business
Processing untrusted FAMOS files on affected systems can lead to full compromise of the host, enabling data theft, ransomware deployment, or persistent access with high urgency due to the critical severity and public exploitability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious .famos file that triggers the out-of-bounds write during parsing in sopen_FAMOS_read; the victim application or library opens the file, causing memory corruption that is leveraged for arbitrary code execution without authentication.
How to fix it
Upgrade libbiosig to a patched release that corrects the sopen_FAMOS_read bounds handling; until available, restrict processing of untrusted .famos files and apply strict input validation or sandboxing around the library.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed libbiosig version is newer than 2.5.0 with the fix applied; test by attempting to open a known-good .famos file and verify no crash or unexpected behavior occurs under memory sanitizers.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious .famos file exploiting the FAMOS parser bounds check failure
- Deliver file via email, download link, or shared storage
- Victim process opens or parses the file using vulnerable libbiosig
- Out-of-bounds write corrupts memory and executes attacker-controlled code
How to detect it
Review application logs for crashes or errors during .famos file parsing; inspect process memory dumps or core files for signs of corruption around FAMOS handling routines; correlate file access events with subsequent suspicious process creation or network activity.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all uses of libbiosig and prioritize patching within 48 hours given the critical CVSS and remote code execution potential
- Block or sandbox untrusted .famos file ingestion until patches are deployed
- Monitor for new fixed versions and update EPSS/KEV status as exploitation data emerges
The record
An out-of-bounds write vulnerability exists in the sopen_FAMOS_read functionality of The Biosig Project libbiosig 2.5.0 and Master Branch (ab0ee111). A specially crafted .famos file can lead to arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
