What it actually does
Use-after-free in sopen_FAMOS_read allows a crafted .famos file to corrupt memory and achieve arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can gain full control of any system processing untrusted .famos files, enabling data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement with no user interaction required.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious .famos file that triggers the use-after-free during parsing in libbiosig; the file is delivered to any application or workflow that opens .famos files, resulting in remote code execution.
How to fix it
Update libbiosig to a patched version that resolves the use-after-free in sopen_FAMOS_read; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications; remove or quarantine legacy 2.5.0 and master-branch builds until updated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed libbiosig version is newer than the vulnerable 2.5.0/ab0ee111 commit; run regression tests with known-good and crafted .famos files; verify no crash or code execution occurs on the malicious sample.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious .famos file exploiting the use-after-free in sopen_FAMOS_read
- Deliver the file via email, download, or shared storage to a target system
- Victim application or script opens the file using libbiosig
- Memory corruption occurs leading to arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for unexpected crashes or memory errors when .famos files are processed; monitor for child processes or network activity spawned from file-parsing workflows that handle .famos input.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all systems and containers using libbiosig and prioritize upgrade
- Block or sandbox processing of untrusted .famos files until patches are applied
- Add .famos file handling to threat-model reviews and incident-response playbooks
The record
A use-after-free vulnerability exists in the sopen_FAMOS_read functionality of The Biosig Project libbiosig 2.5.0 and Master Branch (ab0ee111). A specially crafted .famos file can lead to arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
