What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in .egi file parsing allows an attacker to overwrite memory and achieve arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Systems that process untrusted .egi files can be fully compromised, resulting in data theft, ransomware deployment, or persistent unauthorized access with high urgency for any organization handling biosignal data.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious .egi file that triggers the buffer overflow during parsing, causing the vulnerable application to execute attacker-supplied code when the file is opened or processed.

How to fix it

Update the libbiosig library to the latest patched release that resolves the .egi parsing overflow, rebuild any dependent applications, and enforce strict input validation or sandboxing for untrusted biosignal files.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed library version is newer than the vulnerable release, run regression tests with known-good and boundary .egi files, and verify no crashes or memory corruption occur under fuzzing of the parser.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify or obtain a target application that uses the vulnerable .egi parsing library
  2. Craft a specially formatted .egi file containing oversized data to overflow the heap buffer
  3. Deliver the malicious file via email, web download, or shared storage
  4. Trick the victim into opening or processing the file with the vulnerable software
  5. Execute arbitrary code to establish persistence, exfiltrate data, or deploy additional payloads

How to detect it

Review application crash logs and memory dumps for heap corruption patterns when processing .egi files; correlate file open events with unexpected process creation or privilege escalation.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all software using libbiosig and prioritize updates for internet-facing or high-value systems
  • Block or quarantine .egi files from untrusted sources until patches are applied
  • Add file-type sandboxing and content-disarmament controls for biosignal file handling
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity indicators for any rise in weaponization

The record

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the .egi parsing functionality of The Biosig Project libbiosig 2.5.0 and Master Branch (ab0ee111). A specially crafted .egi file can lead to arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
