What it actually does

The flaw permits a high-privileged network attacker to submit crafted DML statements that trigger an unhandled error path inside the MySQL server process, resulting in an immediate hang or repeatable crash that terminates the entire server instance.

Why it matters to the business

Database availability is lost until the service is restarted; prolonged or repeated exploitation can interrupt business operations, delay transactions, and require emergency maintenance windows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses a high-privileged account connects over any supported protocol and issues a specific sequence of DML statements that the server fails to process safely, forcing the process to terminate.

How to fix it

Upgrade every MySQL 8.0 installation to the latest patch release that resolves the DML handling defect; restrict network access to the database ports and limit the number of accounts holding high privileges.

How to confirm the fix worked

After patching, attempt to reproduce the original DML sequence from a privileged account and confirm the server remains stable; review release notes for the applied version to verify the fix is included.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged database credentials
  2. Establish a network connection to the MySQL listener
  3. Issue crafted DML statements targeting the vulnerable code path
  4. Observe server hang or crash and repeat as needed

How to detect it

Review MySQL error logs for repeated crash signatures or abrupt shutdown messages around the time of suspected activity; correlate with connection logs from high-privileged accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the latest MySQL 8.0 patch set to all instances within the next maintenance cycle
  • Audit and reduce the number of high-privileged accounts that have network access
  • Enable connection and query logging for at least 30 days to support future incident review
  • Monitor EPSS and vendor advisories for any increase in exploit maturity

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DML). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.34 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
