What it actually does

The flaw permits a high-privileged network attacker to submit specially crafted DML statements that trigger an unhandled condition in the MySQL Server DML processing path, resulting in a hang or repeatable crash that terminates the server process and denies service to all clients.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can cause unplanned database outages, interrupting dependent applications and business processes until the server is restarted or recovered.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses high-privileged database credentials connects to the MySQL Server over any supported protocol and issues a sequence of DML commands that reach the vulnerable code path; the server process then enters an unrecoverable state and terminates, producing a denial-of-service condition.

How to fix it

Upgrade all affected MySQL Server installations (8.0.34 and earlier) to the latest vendor-supplied release that resolves the DML component issue; apply the update during the next maintenance window and verify the new version string after restart.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed MySQL Server version is newer than 8.0.34, review release notes for the specific DML fix, and perform controlled load testing with representative DML workloads to ensure the server remains stable.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain or compromise a high-privileged MySQL account with network access
  2. Establish a connection to the target MySQL instance using any supported protocol
  3. Submit crafted DML statements that exercise the defective code path
  4. Observe server hang or crash and loss of availability for all clients

How to detect it

Review MySQL error logs and operating-system process logs for unexpected server terminations or signal-related crashes around the time of suspected activity; correlate with authentication and query logs to identify high-privileged sessions issuing DML statements immediately preceding the outage.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching internet-facing or business-critical MySQL instances first
  • Restrict network access to the database ports to only trusted management networks
  • Enforce least-privilege database accounts and monitor for anomalous DML patterns
  • Include the updated MySQL version in the next scheduled vulnerability scan cycle

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DML). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.34 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
