What it actually does

The flaw in the Server Optimizer component allows a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a hang or repeatable crash (complete DoS) of MySQL Server while also performing unauthorized update, insert, or delete operations on accessible data.

Why it matters to the business

Database instances can experience unplanned downtime and data integrity issues, disrupting operations for organizations relying on MySQL for critical workloads; stable low exploitability reduces immediate widespread risk but patching remains necessary to avoid targeted abuse.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with high database privileges connects over the network using supported protocols, crafts specific queries that exercise the vulnerable Optimizer paths, and repeatedly triggers the condition to cause service crashes or perform limited data modifications.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected MySQL Server installations (8.0.37 and earlier, 8.4.0 and earlier) to the latest patched releases published by Oracle; restrict high-privileged network access and monitor for abnormal query patterns until patches can be applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running MySQL version is newer than the affected releases, review release notes for the Optimizer fix, and test connectivity and query handling under load to verify stability and absence of the prior crash behavior.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged network credentials for a MySQL instance
  2. Establish a connection using one of the supported protocols
  3. Submit crafted queries targeting Optimizer logic
  4. Induce repeated crashes or perform unauthorized data changes

How to detect it

Monitor database logs for repeated crash or hang events correlated with high-privileged connections, inspect slow-query or error logs for Optimizer-related failures, and review audit trails for unexpected data modification attempts by privileged accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all internet-facing or high-value MySQL deployments within standard change windows
  • Limit high-privileged accounts to trusted networks only
  • Enable query logging and resource monitoring to detect anomalous Optimizer activity
  • Review downstream application dependencies for MySQL 8.0/8.4 usage and schedule upgrades accordingly

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: Optimizer). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.37 and prior and 8.4.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.5 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H).
