What it actually does

The flaw resides in the Server: Security: Privileges component of MySQL Server and permits a high-privileged network attacker to bypass intended access controls, resulting in unauthorized insert, update, delete, and limited read operations on accessible data.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations running affected MySQL deployments risk data tampering or partial disclosure by compromised or malicious high-privileged accounts, potentially affecting data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance posture across database-dependent applications.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses high-privileged network credentials connects to the MySQL Server over supported protocols and leverages the privilege-handling weakness to perform data modifications and reads that should be blocked by the authorization model.

How to fix it

Upgrade all MySQL Server installations to versions later than 8.0.36 and 8.3.0 that contain the privilege fix; apply vendor-supplied patches as soon as they become available and verify the updated version string.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running MySQL Server version is newer than the affected releases, review privilege grants for least-privilege compliance, and test that high-privileged accounts can no longer perform the previously unauthorized operations.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain or compromise a high-privileged MySQL account with network access
  2. Establish a connection to the target MySQL Server instance
  3. Invoke operations through the vulnerable privilege component
  4. Execute unauthorized data modifications or limited reads

How to detect it

Examine MySQL audit and general query logs for unexpected data modification or read statements issued by high-privileged accounts; correlate with authentication events from network-accessible accounts and look for patterns inconsistent with normal administrative activity.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching MySQL Server instances to fixed versions
  • Audit and reduce unnecessary high-privileged network accounts
  • Enable and review database audit logging for privilege-related events
  • Monitor EPSS trend and threat intelligence feeds for any increase in exploitation activity

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: Security: Privileges). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.36 and prior and 8.3.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Server accessible data as well as unauthorized read access to a subset of MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.8 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N).
