What it actually does
The flaw in the Server: Optimizer component permits a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a hang or repeatable crash, resulting in complete denial of service for the MySQL Server process.
Why it matters to the business
Database services become unavailable, causing application downtime, disrupted operations, and potential loss of revenue or productivity until the server is restarted.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker who already possesses high-privileged network credentials connects to the MySQL Server over supported protocols and submits specially crafted queries that exercise the vulnerable optimizer logic, causing the server process to hang or terminate.
How to fix it
Apply the latest Oracle MySQL Server patches that resolve the optimizer issue; restrict unnecessary network access to the database; enforce least-privilege accounts; and monitor for abnormal process terminations.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify that running MySQL Server instances report versions newer than the affected releases; review release notes for the specific optimizer fix; and test that crafted queries no longer cause crashes in a lab environment.
Typical attack path
- Obtain high-privileged network credentials for the MySQL Server
- Establish a connection using one of the allowed protocols
- Submit queries designed to trigger the optimizer flaw
- Observe server hang or crash resulting in denial of service
How to detect it
Inspect MySQL error logs and system logs for repeated sudden process terminations or hang indicators around optimizer operations; correlate with authentication events from privileged accounts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all exposed MySQL 8.0 and 8.3 installations
- Limit database network exposure to trusted sources only
- Review and reduce the number of high-privileged accounts
- Enable enhanced logging of optimizer-related errors and process crashes
The record
Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: Optimizer). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.36 and prior and 8.3.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
