What it actually does
A maliciously crafted favicon triggers an out-of-memory condition that crashes the browser process.
Why it matters to the business
Users experience sudden browser crashes that interrupt work, force restarts, and can reduce productivity across large deployments until the browser is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker places a specially crafted favicon on a web page; when a user visits the page the browser attempts to process the favicon, exhausts memory, and terminates.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 113 or later; enable automatic updates where possible and verify the installed version meets or exceeds the fixed release.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the Firefox version is 113 or newer via the about:support page or enterprise inventory tools; optionally test page loads containing known-bad favicons in a lab environment to verify stability.
Typical attack path
- Create a favicon file engineered to trigger excessive memory allocation
- Host the favicon on a web server reachable by targets
- Lure users to the malicious page via links, ads, or compromised sites
- Browser processes the favicon and crashes
How to detect it
Review browser crash logs for out-of-memory events occurring immediately after favicon fetches; correlate with web proxy or DNS logs showing visits to previously unseen domains shortly before crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize rapid deployment of Firefox 113+ across all managed endpoints
- Monitor crash reports for favicon-related out-of-memory signatures
- Disable automatic loading of external favicons via enterprise policy if immediate patching is delayed
The record
A maliciously crafted favicon could have led to an out of memory crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 113.
