What it actually does
Unchecked return value from gfx::SourceSurfaceSkia::Map() allows null pointer dereference during graphics surface mapping, resulting in memory corruption and potential denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected browser crashes can interrupt user workflows, reduce productivity, and require repeated restarts or support intervention in environments relying on Firefox.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker serves a specially crafted web page that exercises the graphics rendering path, causing Map() to return null which is then dereferenced without validation, triggering a crash. No known threat actors or ransomware campaigns are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade all instances of Firefox to version 110 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed Firefox version is 110 or higher; confirm absence of crashes during complex canvas or image rendering tests.
Typical attack path
- Serve malicious webpage to target browser
- Trigger SourceSurfaceSkia graphics code path
- Induce null return from Map()
- Dereference null pointer leading to crash
How to detect it
Review Firefox crash logs and telemetry for entries referencing SourceSurfaceSkia or unhandled null returns in graphics mapping functions.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade all Firefox deployments to version 110 or newer
- Enable automatic browser updates where possible
- Monitor crash reports for graphics-related null dereference signatures
The record
The return value from `gfx::SourceSurfaceSkia::Map()` wasn't being verified which could have potentially lead to a null pointer dereference. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 110.
