What it actually does

The URL validation and parsing logic accepts unsanitized user input and fails to enforce proper escaping or component restrictions during component extraction, permitting injection of executable script content that executes in the context of other users.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can run code inside authenticated users' browsers, enabling session theft, unauthorized configuration changes, or data exfiltration from the monitoring interface, increasing risk of account takeover and operational disruption.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker identifies a URL input field processed by the frontend parser, supplies a crafted value containing script elements that survive component validation, and tricks a victim into interacting with the resulting page so the injected code executes under the victim's privileges.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Zabbix frontend release that corrects URL component validation and escaping; until available, enforce strict input sanitization on all URL fields and consider web application firewall rules that block script tags and event handlers in URL parameters.

How to confirm the fix worked

Test the URL parsing functions with known cross-site scripting vectors containing script, onerror, and javascript: schemes; confirm that component extraction rejects or neutralizes these sequences and that rendered output encodes the input.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate URL-accepting endpoints in the web frontend
  2. Craft a payload that embeds executable content while appearing valid to the parser
  3. Submit the payload via user-controlled input
  4. Induce a victim to load or interact with the resulting page
  5. Execute script to access cookies, perform actions, or exfiltrate data

How to detect it

Inspect web server and application logs for URL parameters containing script tags, javascript: protocols, or event handlers; correlate with user sessions that trigger unexpected redirects or form submissions.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching the Zabbix frontend once fixed versions are released
  • Review all custom URL-handling code for similar validation gaps
  • Enable Content-Security-Policy headers to limit script execution sources
  • Monitor web logs for anomalous URL submissions containing script or javascript: patterns

The record

URL validation scheme receives input from a user and then parses it to identify its various components. The validation scheme can ensure that all URL components comply with internet standards.
