What it actually does

Stored cross-site scripting allows an attacker to inject script payloads that are persisted by the application and later executed in the browser context of other users viewing the affected pages.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of monitoring dashboards can lead to theft of credentials, session hijacking, or unauthorized access to sensitive operational data with limited immediate system downtime.

How an attack unfolds

An authenticated low-privileged user submits a crafted payload through an input field that is stored server-side; subsequent visits by other users trigger automatic execution of the payload in their browsers, enabling actions such as cookie exfiltration or UI manipulation.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Zabbix frontend to a version containing input sanitization and output encoding fixes; apply web application firewall rules that block common script tags and event handlers; restrict user input privileges where feasible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review release notes for XSS-related patches, retest stored input fields with benign script markers, and confirm that payloads are no longer executed on page load.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify an input vector that stores data without sanitization
  2. Craft and submit a persistent script payload
  3. Wait for or lure other users to view the stored content
  4. Execute browser-based actions such as session theft or phishing

How to detect it

Search web server and application logs for unexpected script tags or event handlers in stored data fields; inspect audit trails for entries containing HTML entities or JavaScript constructs submitted by low-privileged accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of the Zabbix frontend as soon as a fixed release is available
  • Implement content-security-policy headers to limit script execution sources
  • Monitor for unusual script activity in application logs and user sessions

The record

Stored or persistent cross-site scripting (XSS) is a type of XSS where the attacker first sends the payload to the web application, then the application saves the payload (e.g., in a database or server-side text files), and finally, the application unintentionally executes the payload for every victim visiting its web pages.
