Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

Someone could trick a logged-in monitoring user into clicking a link that secretly changes what they see on the screen, but only if the attacker also guesses a hard-to-predict security token.

What it actually does

Reflected cross-site scripting flaw allowing an authenticated user to embed executable JavaScript in a crafted link to the services page; execution requires the victim's current CSRF token and runs with the same privileges as the victim's session.

Why it matters to the business

Low-urgency social-engineering risk that could let an attacker alter what a logged-in user sees or trigger unintended actions inside the monitoring interface, with minimal downstream exposure given stable low exploit probability and absence from known exploited lists.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker first creates a services-page URL containing a reflected script payload, then attempts to obtain the victim's periodic CSRF token through prior interaction or timing, and finally sends the link via email or chat; when the victim clicks while authenticated, the script runs in the browser context and can modify page contents.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Zabbix frontend to a patched release that enforces output encoding and proper CSRF handling on the services page; where direct upgrades are unavailable, apply vendor-supplied mitigations or web-application firewall rules that sanitize reflected parameters.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the services page no longer reflects unsanitized script content in URL parameters; re-test with known XSS vectors after upgrade and verify CSRF token rotation remains effective.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious URL containing reflected JavaScript targeting the services page
  2. Acquire or predict the victim's current CSRF token value
  3. Deliver the link to the target user via social-engineering channels
  4. Victim authenticates and activates the link
  5. Payload executes with access to the same DOM objects as the legitimate page

How to detect it

Inspect web-server and application logs for requests to the services page that contain script, javascript, or onerror patterns in query parameters; correlate with user sessions that later exhibit unexpected UI changes or POST requests they did not initiate.

  • /services?*script*
  • javascript: in services page query string
  • onerror= or onload= parameters reaching the services endpoint

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of Zabbix frontend instances to the latest fixed release
  • Enable strict content-security-policy headers for the Zabbix web interface
  • Train users to treat unsolicited links to internal monitoring pages as suspicious
  • Review web-server access logs for anomalous requests containing script tags to the services endpoint

The record

An authenticated user can create a link with reflected Javascript code inside it for services’ page and send it to other users. The payload can be executed only with a known CSRF token value of the victim, which is changed periodically and is difficult to predict. Malicious code has access to all the same objects as the rest of the web page and can make arbitrary modifications to the contents of the page being displayed to a victim during social engineering attacks.
