What it actually does
The flaw permits bypassing of authorization checks, allowing requests to reach protected resources or actions without valid credentials or permissions.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may obtain unauthorized access to data or functionality, increasing breach risk on affected systems; public exploit availability after 1296 days raises long-term exposure despite low EPSS and no KEV listing.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker identifies an authorization-protected endpoint and submits crafted requests that evade checks due to the bypass condition; with exploit code publicly available, the attacker can automate access to restricted areas and perform actions or retrieve data without authentication.
How to fix it
Apply the latest vendor patches addressing the authorization bypass; enforce strict input validation and least-privilege access controls until updates are deployed.
How to confirm the fix worked
After remediation, retest authorization enforcement on previously affected endpoints and review logs for any anomalous pre-patch access attempts.
Typical attack path
- Scan for exposed endpoints that enforce authorization
- Send modified requests that trigger the bypass logic
- Gain access to restricted functionality or data
- Escalate to further actions such as data exfiltration or privilege abuse
How to detect it
Examine application and access logs for sequences of failed authorization followed by successful access to the same restricted resource; look for unusual request patterns that previously required authentication.
What your security team should do
- Treat public exploit availability as priority for patching despite low EPSS
- Implement compensating controls such as web application firewalls or additional auth layers
- Monitor logs for indicators of bypass attempts on authorization-protected paths
The record
A path traversal vulnerability exists in curl <8.0.0 SFTP implementation causes the tilde (~) character to be wrongly replaced when used as a prefix in the first path element, in addition to its intended use as the first element to indicate a path relative to the user's home directory. Attackers can exploit this flaw to bypass filtering or execute arbitrary code by crafting a path like /~2/foo while accessing a server with a specific user.
