What it actually does
Bypasses authentication controls to grant unauthorized access to protected resources or endpoints without valid credentials.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can access sensitive systems or data without authentication, increasing risk of unauthorized access or disruption; moderate urgency due to available exploit code, low EPSS score with slight upward trend, and no KEV or ransomware association after over three years of public disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
With public exploit code available, an attacker locates the exposed service, sends crafted requests that skip or circumvent the authentication layer, and directly interacts with protected functionality to access or manipulate resources.
How to fix it
Apply vendor security updates that resolve the authentication bypass; where patches are unavailable or delayed, enforce network segmentation, restrict access to the affected service, and implement compensating controls such as web application firewalls.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version incorporates the authentication fix, retest that all endpoints require valid credentials, and validate that bypass techniques no longer succeed.
Typical attack path
- Scan for or identify the vulnerable service exposure
- Craft and send requests designed to bypass authentication checks
- Access restricted endpoints or resources without credentials
- Perform actions such as data access, configuration changes, or further exploitation
How to detect it
Examine authentication and access logs for requests reaching protected resources without preceding credential validation or session tokens; correlate with indicators of direct API or endpoint interaction from unexpected sources.
What your security team should do
- Apply available patches immediately given public exploit maturity
- Harden network exposure of the affected service and enforce least-privilege access
- Enable enhanced logging on authentication events and review for anomalies
- Monitor EPSS trend and threat intelligence feeds for any increase in exploitation activity
The record
An authentication bypass vulnerability exists in libcurl <8.0.0 in the FTP connection reuse feature that can result in wrong credentials being used during subsequent transfers. Previously created connections are kept in a connection pool for reuse if they match the current setup. However, certain FTP settings such as CURLOPT_FTP_ACCOUNT, CURLOPT_FTP_ALTERNATIVE_TO_USER, CURLOPT_FTP_SSL_CCC, and CURLOPT_USE_SSL were not included in the configuration match checks, causing them to match too easily. This could lead to libcurl using the wrong credentials when performing a transfer, potentially allowing unauthorized access to sensitive information.
