What it actually does

Memory corruption vulnerabilities in the browser engine that could allow arbitrary code execution with sufficient attacker effort.

Why it matters to the business

Remote compromise of user systems running the affected browser version could enable data theft, malware deployment, or lateral movement, increasing risk for any organization with browser-dependent workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious web content that triggers one of the unreported memory safety bugs; when rendered in an affected browser instance the corruption is leveraged to execute attacker-controlled code.

How to fix it

Upgrade all instances of Firefox to version 107 or later; apply vendor updates as soon as they become available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed browser version is 107 or higher via the about:support page or enterprise inventory tooling; re-test after patch deployment.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts or compromises a site serving malicious content
  2. Victim navigates to the page using an unpatched browser
  3. Content triggers memory corruption
  4. Attacker payload achieves arbitrary code execution

How to detect it

Review browser crash reports and process creation logs for unexpected child processes spawned by firefox.exe or equivalent; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of anomalies.

What your security team should do

  • Expedite browser updates across endpoints and enforce automatic updates where possible
  • Monitor vendor advisories for similar memory-safety issues
  • Consider application allow-listing or sandboxing for high-risk user populations

The record

Mozilla developers Gabriele Svelto, Yulia Startsev, Andrew McCreight and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 106. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code.<br />*Note*: This advisory was added on December 13th, 2022 after discovering it was inadvertently left out of the original advisory. The fix was included in the original release of Firefox 107. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 107.
