What it actually does
A medium-integrity user process can manipulate file-locking behavior in the application update mechanism to interfere with the SYSTEM-level updater, bypassing access controls and permitting SYSTEM-privileged file operations on attacker-controlled paths, resulting in local privilege escalation.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who already have a foothold at user level can gain full SYSTEM control on affected systems, enabling complete compromise of the endpoint, data theft, persistence, or further lateral movement with high urgency for organizations running outdated Firefox or Thunderbird instances.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first obtains execution inside a medium-integrity user process, injects code to alter file-locking behavior around the update mechanism, forces or waits for the updater to run, then leverages the resulting SYSTEM operations on user-writable paths to escalate privileges.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 138 or later, Firefox ESR to 128.10 or 115.23 or later, and Thunderbird to 138 or 128.10 or later. Remove older versions and verify the update mechanism completes successfully after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed versions match or exceed the fixed releases listed in remediation guidance; inspect update logs and process integrity levels during simulated update attempts to ensure no interference from lower-privileged processes is possible.
Typical attack path
- Obtain code execution in a medium-integrity user process
- Inject or load malicious code that manipulates file locks used by the updater
- Trigger or wait for the SYSTEM-level update process to start
- Perform file operations that the updater executes with SYSTEM rights on attacker-controlled paths
- Achieve privilege escalation and execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM
How to detect it
Review system and application update logs for unexpected file operations or locking events initiated by non-SYSTEM processes; examine process creation events showing medium-integrity code interacting with the updater executable; look for post-escalation artifacts such as new SYSTEM-level scheduled tasks or modified protected files.
What your security team should do
- Immediately prioritize patching all Firefox and Thunderbird instances to the fixed versions due to the high CVSS and potential for local escalation
- Inventory all endpoints running affected Mozilla products and enforce automatic updates where possible
- Monitor for any post-patch anomalies in update-related processes and file operations
The record
Thunderbird's update mechanism allowed a medium-integrity user process to interfere with the SYSTEM-level updater by manipulating the file-locking behavior. By injecting code into the user-privileged process, an attacker could bypass intended access controls, allowing SYSTEM-level file operations on paths controlled by a non-privileged user and enabling privilege escalation. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox 138, Firefox ESR 128.10, Firefox ESR 115.23, Thunderbird 138, and Thunderbird 128.10.
