CVE-2022-46880

What it actually does

A missing validation check on texture units in the graphics rendering pipeline triggers a use-after-free condition that corrupts memory and can produce an exploitable crash.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or sends specially crafted WebGL content that exercises the faulty texture-unit path; when the victim’s browser or Thunderbird renders the content the missing check leaves a dangling pointer that the attacker can subsequently dereference to achieve code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 105 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.6 or later, and Thunderbird to 102.6 or later; apply updates through the product’s built-in updater or enterprise deployment channels as soon as possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query installed product versions via about:support or the Help > About dialog and confirm they meet or exceed the fixed releases; re-test the affected graphics code paths with the original proof-of-concept artifacts if available.

Typical attack path

1. Attacker prepares a malicious webpage or email containing crafted WebGL shaders or textures.
2. Victim is lured to visit the page or open the message.
3. Rendering engine processes the texture units without the required validation.
4. Use-after-free occurs, allowing memory manipulation.
5. Attacker chains the primitive into arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

How to detect it

Scan browser and Thunderbird crash logs for entries referencing texture units or WebGL; correlate with web-request logs showing visits to previously unknown domains shortly before the crash; monitor EDR telemetry for unexpected child processes spawned from the browser after graphics activity.

• Immediately deploy the fixed releases across all managed endpoints.
• Block or isolate any remaining instances that cannot be updated within the next 48 hours.
• Review crash-reporting telemetry for graphics-related terminations that match the described texture-unit pattern.
• Update vulnerability-management dashboards to reflect the corrected versions and close the associated finding.
